Workshop on Environmental and Social Safeguards for African nations For the second consecutive year, the OPEC Fund hosted a joint workshop on “Strengthening Environmental and Social Safeguards for African Countries” with the African Development Bank (AfDB), in cooperation with the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA). The three-day event brought together senior government officials from ministries and agencies from Burundi, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Niger, Senegal and Uganda, alongside representatives of leading development finance institutions and technical experts. Discussions covered a range of E&S topics including biodiversity and ecosystem management, due diligence, country systems, occupational and community health and safety, social inclusion, abuse and harassment, cultural heritage, land acquisition and resettlement.

Celebrating Austria’s National Heritage Day

Upholding a time-honored tradition, the OPEC Fund opened its doors to the general public as Austria celebrated its “Tag des Denkmals” (National Heritage Day) on the last Sunday in September. Visitors were shown around the historic state apartments of the former Hoch- and Deutschmeister-Palais, which was designed from 1864 to 1868 by the architect Theophil von Hansen as a residence for Archduke Wilhelm Franz of Austria, a member of the royal house of Habsburg. Marking the OPEC Fund’s Golden Jubilee this year, the tour included a special exhibition commemorating the institution’s goals, achievements and impact in the first 50 years of its existence.
