OPEC Fund at United Nations General Assembly
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September provided the platform for the OPEC Fund to deepen its engagement with development partners and countries. President Abdulhamid Alkhalifa addressed a ministerial meeting of the V20, the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations, spoke at an event hosted by the Gavi health alliance and held numerous bilateral meetings. He emphasized the need to move from project design to developing system solutions. “Financing should strengthen the institutions and systems that countries rely on, creating the institutional framework for individual projects to succeed and thrive.”
President opens IAEA Scientific Forum with commitment to cancer care
OPEC Fund President Abdulhamid Alkhalifa opened the Scientific Forum 2026 of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in September in Vienna with a commitment to the fight against cancer. Under the IAEA initiative “Rays of Hope” the OPEC Fund is financing a cancer treatment center in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with a US$69 million sovereign loan combined with a US$975,000 technical assistance grant. Further projects are under discussion.
