“We’ve wasted too much time on roadmaps” OFQ : People talk about “false dichotomies” in climate action. What do they mean? Mahmoud Mohieldin: The international community has a very ambitious agenda for climate action and the SDGs. To achieve that agenda we need finance and partnerships, especially with the private sector, but also with think tanks and technology, research and development centers. We need to focus on these enablers, ensure behavioral change — but also stop wasting time with questions like, “Do we need bigger development banks or do we need better development banks?” We need both. My message is simple: Focus on the practical matters. We’ve wasted too much time on roadmaps, for example on the state of multilateral developing banks. Yes, we may need to divide operational models more e ffi ciently, but most of all we need to accelerate and really get our act together.
