NEW OPEC FUND DEVELOPMENT FUNDING By Nicholas K. Smith, OPEC Fund

FAST-TRACK APPROVALS Approvals for operations in Chad, China, Jordan, Liberia, Mauritania, Paraguay and Senegal were initiated via fast- track procedure to ensure finance reaches those who need it quickly and effectively.

Chad US$11 million

Hospitals and health centers in the country stand to benefit from the second phase of a project, which addresses the lack of qualified technicians in the field of biomedicine. Specifically, the loan will enable 600 additional students per year to complete a comprehensive education in technical sciences through the construction of a biomedical department at one of the country’s main schools (see page 49).

Jordan US$100 million The country’s food security will be strengthened through the procurement and expansion of storage capacity for wheat and barley in order to maintain an adequate level of short-term strategic reserves.

country’s coastline will see an improvement in the fisheries management sector . Some of the project components include upscaling aquaculture technology, new fishing vessels, capacity building, as well as the construction of artisanal fish landing platforms, fishing ports and hatcheries.

The capacity of Hunan Province’s education sector will be expanded through the construction of a secondary vocational education school campus that aims to serve 5,000 students per year as well as provide capacity building for 20,000 local professionals and skilled laborers.
