Women and youth, in particular, will benefit from tailored capacity-building programs that enhance skills and increase economic participation. These initiatives will not only help boost household incomes but also promote social inclusion and empowerment among traditionally mar- ginalized groups. Overall, the expected outcomes of the project reflect a com- prehensive transformation of the agricultural landscape in the target areas. Farming communities will become more resilient to climate risks, more productive and competitive in agricultural markets and better equipped to achieve food security and improved living conditions. These outcomes directly support Honduras’s broader development goals and contribute to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty reduction, hunger eradication, gender equality and climate action.
Expected Outcomes
The INNOVASAN project is expected to generate significant improvements in agricultural sustainability, climate resil- ience, food security and the socio-economic well-being of smallholder farmers in north-central Honduras. By fostering the transition toward more sustainable and climate-resilient agri-food systems the project aims to transform the liveli- hoods of rural communities facing chronic poverty and vul- nerability. Through the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and the promotion of nutrition-sensitive value chains farmers will be able to improve their productivity and manage natural resources more sustainably. These practices, which include agroforestry, organic fertilization and improved post-harvest handling are designed to enhance both agricultural output and environmental stewardship, ensuring the long-term viability of farming systems. Climate resilience will also be significantly strengthened. Investments in water infrastructure, including irrigation sys- tems and rainwater harvesting, alongside the restoration of micro-watersheds and the application of nature-based solutions, will improve water security for both agricultural and household use. These measures, combined with train- ing in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, will enhance the capacity of communities to withstand and recover from extreme weather events such as floods and droughts, which frequently affect the region. Food and nutrition security are expected to improve as a re- sult of increased food production and targeted investments in sanitation, hygiene and nutrition education. Assessment according to the Joint MDB Methodology for Tracking Climate Finance
The OPEC Fund’s financing under the INNOVASAN pro- ject in Honduras qualifies as adaptation finance, in line with the MDB Climate Finance “three-step approach” for identifying adaptation-related expenditures. The project is firmly rooted in a climate adaptation ra- tionale, aiming to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations facing the impacts of climate change with the help of investments in sustainable agriculture, water security and institutional capacity building.
